The Legend of the Lost Dutchman Finally Solved! (Or is It?)

If you live in the Southwest you may be familiar with the "Lost Dutchman". This is the time of year that the kids are out and travel is fun! One thing I like to do with my kiddos is to take fun yet educational trips. Recently we visited such a place -- Superstition Mountain. This is where the legend of the "Lost Dutchman" originated. This is a great day trip!

This first stop is the train station. This is where you can pick up a ticket pass that will get you into the three top destinations: train ride, mine and mystery shack. This is a really great value and there is lots of valuable information given on each tour that is different from the others.
Since you are already at the train station it makes sense to start your day with a ride. This is a great way to get an overview of the little ghost town and hear about the legend of the "Lost Dutchman"'.
After the train ride head on over to the center of town!
Check out the mine that put this place on the map!
During the tour we learned about why catalogs are now glossy. Back in the miner days the men used to use the pages from the Sears catalogs to wipe their bums down in the mine. Those catalogs that were being sent to the miners were never getting into their intended audience -- the women. Once Sears found out their ads were used as toilet paper they switched it to glossy paper.

After the tour of the mine, head on over to the Mystery Shack. This is one of the most fascinating spots because it seems to defy gravity.

There is a really beautiful path that leads up to the center of town.
Once arriving in the center of town it is hard to miss the corky antiques all around in random places.

Of course there are shops full of lots of local products. One of the most unique things were wall hangings made from the red dirt found locally created my a local artist with molds he made on the side of a wagon.
Of course every southwest ton has to have a few cacti -- real or not!
My kids and I got a good chuckle as we headed towards the end of town in which we found a little church that shared the back with a firing range.
As you leave town you have got to stop into the local coffee house and grab a Prickly Pear Lemonade. You know you are there when you see the antique oven sitting out front!
If you are up for it, take a yonder over to the Superstition Mountain. There are lots of great trails to walk or hike. We thoroughly enjoyed our day here and hope if you ever are in these parts you pay this place a visit.

Until next time ~ Happy Trails!

Compose Your Life ATC Set

When I am short on time, but want to create desperately I create Artistic Trading Cards. I was in a desperate need of some creative therapy and only had about 45 minutes. I pulled out my supplies and made three pretty cards. These are fun 2.5 by 3.5 inch cards that can be stored in baseball sleeves. A lot of artists like to trade them (hence why they are called trading cards).  They also can be used as tags on gifts. To create this set I used the Compose Your Life Mixed Media Pack.
I used the watercolor ATC cards as the base from the pack:

I painted them with Glitter Glam I have in my stash:
I cut down a few of the scrap sheets of paper. I cut the first sheet to 2.25 by 3.25 inches. The second 2.0 by 3.0 inches and the third 1.75 by 2.75 inches.
I layered the pieces on my base.
I used pop dots and the images from the line to finish my cards.

Next time you have only a few minutes to create try making a few ATCs.

Travel: Great Places in Unexpected Locations

Today I explored Phoenix Arizona! I started off  in search of Mucho Mas Art Studio -- a search it truly ended up being! I learned about this mexi-style boutique through my friend's, Lisa Kettell Designs, Instagram feed. I knew I had to visit when I saw the gorgeous bright colors and unique art pieces -- both traditional canvas and mixed media. I entered the address into my navigation system and set out on my journey. It ended up being more of a hunt than I anticipated. When I arrived at the location it appeared to not be there. Instead there was an adorable little market and chic bohemian store. I drove around the building and there I saw it in the back behind the ally -- Mucho Mas! I found directions on what appeared to be the entrance of the store instructing me to go around the building and enter through Galeana 39.
Galeana 39 was a wonderful surprise! I was welcomed into the store by the owner, Curtis Parhams (Galeana39.com 602-559-7791).
Curtis told me the history of the store. It was named after the street of his first store he owned in New Mexico. He started his business with hand making toxin free essential oil candles -- which are still the best sellers in his store.
He branched out finding global pieces that are one of a kind. There was a bed  from India to hand milled sea salt in beautiful hand sewn  bags made by  women in Mexico that helps support them and their families.
You can find Galeana 39 on Instagram @Galeana39 or visit the store Tuesday - Saturday 11-4.
I ventured towards the back of the store to Mucho Mas Art Studio.
It was like an amusement park for my eyes!
I was giddy with excitement as I wondered from art piece to art piece.
The walls were black which provided the perfect back drop to the bright colorful art the adorned them. The mex-style boutique not only is a place to purchase art, but also a studio and gallery. Classes are offered and there was a table in which artist work in the shop at various times. Art pieces vary from canvas to mixed media. A decked out rotary phone in gems was a fantastic show stopper. One of the most unique things I have ever seen were the prints by Emily Costello. These prints were actually small canvases.

Mucho Mas Art Studio is on Facebook and Instagram, @MuchoMasArtStuido or stop by Wednesday - Saturday 11-4.
My next shop I found on route to a store Curtis from Galeana 39 recommended (that is a little later in this article). Retro Ranch is next to a gentlemen's club. I am so glad I parked and went in! This store had some of the best retro cowboy inspired swag and home decor around.
A line of cowboy boots (some with rhinestones) and cowboy hats greeted me upon entry.

There was a huge selection of denim. Everything from Wranglers to jean jackets. Across the store was a wonderful selection of retro home goods.
There even was a basket of free lemons by the from door. To learn more about Retro Ranch check out their website: www.retroranch.com or stop by the store Tuesday - Sunday 11-6 (4303 N 7th Ave Phoenix AZ).
My last shop of the day was recommended by Curtis from Galeana 39. It was a 1990's vintage inspired minimalist boutique owned by Michelle Nuenz.
Michelle is a former graphic designer that started designing scarves. She eventually took the leap and opened Noons. The store had a chic modern industrial design.
Half the store had 1990,s vintage finds.
The rest was full of local artists and products. Michelle was a thoughtful and kind conversationalist whom was passionate about the community and environment.
For more information on the store location and hours contact Noons at info@noons.com and follow on Instagram @_ _ _noons.
My last stop of the day was an amazing coffee house.
This place is by far the coolest coffee stop I have ever been to -- and that is saying a lot because I have been to a ton. Copper Star Coffee (4200 North 7th Ave in Phoenix 602-266-2136) is an old gas station that still has the vintage pumps in front of the store serving as the drive thru.

A nice patio welcomed customers as they entered the shop. Not only was the coffee house amazing to look at, but the menu was extensive and delicious. They even had gluten free options. They give you a complimentary pastry of your choice on your first visit. It was the perfect end to a fabulous day!
Each of these places I visited all had two things in common. They were huge supporters of their community and environment. Each place carried eco-friendly products and were passionate in their support of the environment. Next time you are in Phoenix I hope you take some time to explore a few of these places. They truly are diamonds in the rough!
Until next time ~ Happy Exploring ;-)

Expo Blog Hop!

Two fabulous blog hops in one week?!?!?! Say what?!?!?! Yep! This has been such a fun week for me. I love partcipating and seeing other artist' blogs! Today's blog hop is brought to you by gorgeous trim by Expo based out of Canada! Oh my goodness you guys! I just wanted to hoard this trim. It is so very pretty!
Before we get to the trim, first check out the canvas I made to use as the focal point:

The corners needed to be addressed. Or should I say "dressed" and that is just what I did!

I used fabric glue to adhere each row of trim to the canvas. It turned out just darling and perfect for my purple wall in my craft room! I am going to alter an apron next with the trim.

How to Mask A Stamped Image

I know yesterday was the fantastic blog hop with Rita Barakat's new stamps! If you missed it, don't worry! Just go to my post yesterday and hop today. I am loving these new stamps she created with Technique Junkies and had to make a few sweet ATC with them. I used a hodge podge of supplies from my stash and I show you how here in this video:
Here are a few pictures of the ATC I created in the video:

I like these so much I don't think I am ready to trade them. I have added them to my ATC binder and can't wait to make some more!
